If you grew up in the Philippines, you might have once blocked off portions of your street to play a game of patintero with your friends. Yup, life was a whole lot simpler back in the day – all we needed to amuse ourselves was a piece of chalk and hours of endless fun. I haven’t played patintero since I was a kid, and I’m sure the same thing can be said for most adults and teenagers. But thanks to Yabang Pinoy, a Filipino pride movement, everyone now has the opportunity to participate in the largest game of patintero ever.

On June 21, 2009, the Pinakamahabang Todo Patintero event will be help from 3 pm to 5 pm at the University of the Philippines Diliman. It’s completely free and the only requirement is for you to show up with an abaca band, Yabang Pinoy’s signature accessory. To compete, you need to form a team of six to eight members. No age limit, no restrictions.

To join Todo Patintero, contact Yabang Pinoy advocate Weng de Leon through todopatintero@gmail.com or through +63905 268 9194. You may also visit yabangpinoy.com and http://yabangpinoys.multiply.com for more information.

A Family Day of Retro Filipino Games

The Havaianas Playback is very relevant to this day and age where video games and media players take a lot of our kids leisure activities. Imagine this scenario.

a) A single venue where you can relive your old-school, game-day glory.
b) An event where tin cans, garters and rubber slippers can test your strategy and agility.
c) A chance for you to prove your street-game cred and prove that you were—and still could be—the player to beat.

And I got to experience being brought back to my childhood days. What a clever event this is. Let me take you to my afternoon stroll at the Havaianas playground.

Look at AJ ,trying to get as high as he can with this Chinese garter game. I don’t recall playing this game when I was a kid in the sixties but I remember my kids playing this in their grade school years.

Piko is one street game that I often played with my siblings in our garage. We lined the pavement with chalk and used a flat stone as our “marker”. Here Jason tries to hop all the squares without touching a line or throwing the market out of the grid.

I can never forget sipa because when I was in high school, we often played this. In Cebu, we called it “takyan”. Since we wore skirts, we often played this with our foot on the side not on the front like how Eric does it, so that our underwear won’t be exposed. Our sipa had brightly colored feathers in it. Ah , the wonderful teen memories when we were not talking about boys.

Now I don’t recall playing tumbang preso unless this is a “tagalog” street game.

Neither the Lakad-lata rings a bell to me but look how Fritz and Ryan trying to race from each other. The winner is …Fritz!

Now I remember Patintero though we called it Tubig-tubig. AJ remembers it as tubiga. Childhood memories brings me back again to our very large garage where we lined the pavement with chalk.

So as you can see, my blogger friends had all the fun (and being competitive). They got the chance to pit their skills against fellow veterans in tumbang preso, piko, patintero, sipa, sungka, Chinese garter and lakad lata, and introduce it to a new generation of street-gamers as well. Plus, a stop at the Prize Station meant they got to bring home a slew of Havaianas premium items.

There’s no better way to play retro street-games with style and relive the irreplaceable memories of traditional Filipino fun.

It was really nice of Havaianas to give old-school, street-game players the chance to play the games that made us champs and then pass the torch to the next generation.

I hope this is NOT the last of the Havaianas Playback. They should continue this project every quarter especially during school breaks. We need our kids to get up from their chairs and start running, jumping and laughing.

Oh yeah, I ended my afternoon by buying a brand new Havaianas pair since they were giving out 20% discount. What a bargain for quality buttery soft flip-flops.

This is good news for the public. The first electric jeepney took a test drive in Makati City by no other than the Makati mayor himself. The electric powered jeepney or e-jeepney is a 10 to 12-seater but can run only at 40 kms an hour. This e-jeepney is financed by the Green Renewable Independent Power Producer Inc (GRIPP) in an effort to encourage the use of alternative fuels as well as to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases on climate change.

The e-Jeepneys are powered by five-horsepower electric motor engines with 12 batteries that, at full capacity, allow the vehicles to run 120 to 140 kilometers at around 40 kilometers per hour.

The batteries are charged for eight hours on ordinary 220-volt power sockets at a minimum cost of P120. In contrast, regular fume-spewing jeepneys guzzle P300 (US$6.50) or more of diesel each day.

Each e-Jeepney costs at least P400,000 to build, around P100,000 more than most shop-built diesel jeepneys.

I like the idea that it runs only at a maximum 40 Kms per hour especially in busy traffic areas of commercial centers. It isn’t feasible in highways though unless the speed is increased. Anyway, kudos to Greenpeace for undertaking this project. May we see more ejeepneys plying the streets of Manila.
A driver was killed when a huge billboard landed on his van along the northbound EDSA lane. Other people sustained injuries as well. It’s about time that our government totally ban these huge billboards along the major thoroughfares. Can you imagine if an earthquake disaster will happen ? I don’t think these billboard trusses are safe. The above photos is a billboard along the Magallanes Interchange. It landed on a yellow commuter bus. Fortunately no deaths were reported but let’s not wait for another casualty to happen .

President Macapagal-Arroyo will soon issue tougher regulations on size, material and location, and her staunch ally, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, is gearing for war against the purported stalwarts of “corporate greed.”

Santiago yesterday called on Metro Manila mayors to slap multimillion-peso damage suits on the owners of billboards that fell and killed people as strong winds brought by Typhoon “Milenyo” battered the metropolis on Thursday.

We live in Makati City, hardest hit by [tag]Typhoon Milenyo[/tag] (international codename [tag]Typhoon Xangsane[/tag]) . I captured some shots of the typhoon aftermath that affected my village located in Makati City. The typhoon, which had maximum winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 150 kph directly hit Metro Manila. The last typhoon to hit Manila was Typhoon Rosing in 1995. (Read details at my blog entry on Typhoon Milenyo and typhoon Milenyo photos)

The typhoon toppled trees, billboards and electric posts, also causing floods and deaths to more than 48 persons.

Dance Master aka traffiic enforcer, Noel Quilatan always makes me laugh with his humorous traffic signals. He is usually stationed at the intersection of Mckinely Road, Makati and 5th ave of the Global City. I often point him out to my husband and exclaim how could this traffic enforcer be so jolly under the simmering Manila heat!

My husband goes “one has to be crazy enough to enjoy your job that way!”

I can just imagine the tiring hours these traffic enforcer face everyday. He is always smiling to every motorist that pass his way. And if you see this particular person, he will surely brighten your day.

According to an article about him in Daily Inquirer (December 31, 2006), ” I just listen my heart and the music in my mind and dance spontaneously while I direct traffic”————

The scenery in EDSA is now a billboard jungle. What a pathetic eye sore! This is the Guadalupe pedestrian overpass where traffic hits a peak in most hours of the day. Notice how the Bayantel ad is now of a smiling kid instead of a sexually satisfied woman. I wonder when the local government will act on the billboard ban since outdoor ad groups are protesting against the ban.

The National Building Code Development Office (NBCDO) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has drafted a circular that would prohibit the putting up of advertising signs 100 meters from the center of national highways and transmission lines, and the removal of such structures within the area, in the interest of public safety.

The NBCDO said billboards pose a risk because they could distract drivers.

It also said haphazardly built billboards could collapse and harm people.
