Cervical cancer claims the lives of 12 Filipinas everyday. The need to provide protection against the disease is urgent, but how far would you go to spread awareness and vaccinate women? For the cyclists who are participating in the Tour of Hope 2011: Going the Xtra Mile Against Cervical Cancer, they’ll be cycling from Manila to Laoag (500 milometers) in just 5 days. Organized by Bravehearts with GlaxoSmithKline and Team David’s Salon, the Tour of Hope 2011 is more than just a way to promote awareness. Along the way, cyclists will also be vaccinating 500 women during the tour. And of course, the participants will be enjoying the picturesque views of Camarines Sur, Zambales, and Vigan.

The Tour of Hope 2011 – 500: Going the Xtra Mile Against Cervical Cancer will kick off at the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City on May 28, 2011. For biking enthusiasts who’d like to show their support but can’t make the 5-day journey, there will be a Mini Tour of Hope on May 7 at Filinvest, Alabang.

Bravehearts is a non-profit organization initially led by the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network (CECAP) for the Cancer Institute Foundation (CIF). It is dedicated to raising awareness on cervical cancer prevention and is supported by a growing number of women, including prominent personalities such as Abbygale Arenas-de Leon, who is the current president of the organization, Senator Loren Legarda, Pia Magalona, Ellen Tordesillas, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Jeena Lopez, Maimai Davao, Joyette Jopson, and Suzi Entrata. For further inquiries, please email braveheartsphilippines@gmail.com. To be a part of The Tour of Hope 2011 – 500: Going the Xtra Mile Against Cervical Cancer, please email Joyette Jopson at joyette.jopson@gmail.com or contact her at 0917-8827352.

I have been looking all over for Giants gear and gifts to give as a souvenir item for my husband. I arrived in San Francisco on October 20 and I had no idea that the Giants were playing. I didn’t even know who they were until I got here. I kept thinking I should buy a shirt for my husband even if the Giants win or lose. The day came when they were the champions and I realized too late that I didn’t get to buy a shirt. I wanted one that was orange with black lettering. Apparently stocks of these t-shirts ran out especially when the Giants Parade was announced.

A staff of my sister told me there was a Giants’ Dugout near the office at the Stonestown Galleria. It was worth the try.

There was new stock of t-shirts , San Francisco Giants 2010 World Series Champions BIG and TALL Official Club House T-Shirt. It arrived at the branch just last night, November 3. This branch got its fair share of customers. One lady told me she waited 3 hours in line for a shirt near the stadium and never got hold of a shirt. The “Lyncecum” shirts also ran out. Same with the orange tshirt.

I settled for the San Francisco Giants 2010 World Series Champions Official Club House T-Shirt which cost $29.95 before sales tax.

At least I got my souvenir.

You can also shop online.

Stonestown Galleria Address: 3251 20th Avenue, San Francisco, CA, 94132————

The Philippines in general may not be a very big soccer nation but there are some soccer enthusiasts in the country who are willing to participate in tournaments for a good cause. Take the Homeless World Cup for instance, a global event that sees more than 60 nations gathered in a series of street soccer tournaments. Unlike the actual World Cup, where countries are only in it for national pride, The Homeless World Cup was initiated to bring awareness and opportunity to marginalized people from all over the world. Homeless men and women get a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent their country and become national heroes.

This year’s Homeless World Cup will be taking place at Capacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from the 19th-26th September 2010. And yes, the Philippines will be sending a team! Representing the Philippines are twins Hammid and Abdula Pasion (Laguna), brothers Mark and Lexter Maravilla (Quezon), best friends Michael Quinlat and Tonie Mark Arinal (Talisay City), Revect Lagardo (Manila), and Leopoldo “Jun Jun” Aragon (Bacolod). To further inspire the players, the Team Philippines coach wrote a song called Bayani, whose lyrics talk of the change within the group and the courage and pride the team will take to the international tournament.

Team Philippines 2010 builds on the success of Philippine teams who took part in Homeless World Cup competitions in 2008 and 2009. The 2008 Philippine team finished 37th out of 48 nations in Melbourne, Australia, beating teams such as Rwanda, India, Namibia and Sweden. In 2009, the Philippine squad played to a respectable 29th place finish. This also landed the team the recognition as the best in Asia.

The Homeless World Cup project in the Philippines is initiated by Urban Opportunities for Change Foundation. Find out how you can be part of this unique and powerful opportunity to bring change in the communities and lives of people by visiting http://www.streetsoccerphilippines.com.

If you enjoy doing yoga, or if you know a yoga practitioner who would appreciate a new yoga mat bag, consider buying one of these Philippine-made mat bags as a present. The yoga bags were created using natural Philippine fibers and indigenous textiles, as well as textiles from Thailand. The bags are made by commissioned Filipino seamstresses in order to supplement their income and develop new skills.

I’ve always wanted to learn surfing but my first hurdle is to have balance. What I didn’t know is one can actually learn “how to balance” inside one own’s home.

On those days when the surf is a little flat, here’s a useful piece of surfing-wisdom: your garage, living room, maybe even your bedroom floor, will do.

Sure, nothing beats the experience of the water on your fingertips as you graze the surface of a glassy wave, but the thrill of surfing is hardly lost on an Indo Board either.

More than being a surfing-simulator, the specially shaped oval board balanced on a long roller—simple as it looks—offers the kind of high-intensity surf experience that preps your body to handle the ever changing demands of the ocean.

Created by a fellow surfer, the Indo Board was developed by Hunter Joslin, whose 40-year expertise in the sport translated into a tool that was originally intended to help surfers train out of the water.

Take a look at this video:

“My interest in surfing gave me reason to explore beyond the conventional use of the balance board. Once I had the basic stance mastered (standing sideways with one foot on each end), I changed my approach to the device and started learning how to walk on the board from end to end,” shares Joslin. “The action of the board moving back and forth on the roller was a totally similar sensation to riding a surfboard. It was FUN and I could do it for hours at a time. As a result of this practice, I advanced much quicker than my friends in surfing abilities.”

It wasn’t long before Joslin discovered, from his growing cadre of loyal Indo Board fans, that it had a lot more to offer than the thrill of an indoor ride. Users reported increased leg strength, enhanced core fitness as well as flexibility and proved to be a perfect work out for a variety of sports where balance is key. It takes about 5 to 15 minutes to master basic control of the device and helps improve important elements such as endurance and core fitness for activities that require agility and innate balance coordination.

Locally, the Indo Board has been making waves in the boardsports industry, with avid enthusiasts such as Freddy Gonzalez taking note of the inherent fitness advantages it has to offer. As the President of one of the country’s premier boardsports retail stores, Aloha Boardsports Inc. and pioneer of the local surf tourism initiative, Onboard Phillippines, Gonzalez is passionate about the fitness and training possibilities that the device has to offer, for expert surfers and novices alike.

“Consider the amount of time you are up and riding a wave—the average ride lasts about 10 to 15 seconds,” he explains. “The Indo Board allows you to ride for minutes on end, utilizing the exact same muscles that are used when surfing. For learning surfers, it’s a great opportunity to learn at your own pace given that you’re not at the mercy of the weather, while it’s a great way to practice balance and coordination for those who already know how to surf. You don’t have to worry about the weather or the waves, still enjoy the thrill of surfing and everything you gain from practice will be useful when you go into water.”

While it may be no surprise that the board riding industry—from surfers to all-terrain boarders to kitesurfers—instantly took to the device, its rise in popularity has also paved the way for the tool to be used to build functional reflex strength for mainstream sports outside of the core market. Today, enthusiasts from other sports such as football, basketball, golf, tennis, hockey, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and inline skating train on the Indo Board to provide the benefits that it uniquely focuses on.

One can even use the Indo Board for basketball training.

Or even Golf

Push ups are more challenging now

And evidently, with its winning combination of boardsports action and core fitness ideals, you can expect nothing less than the Indo Board crossing over from extreme sports and into the realm of daily fitness.
