Milliner Mich Dulce is one of my favorite local designers, and it’s good to know that she pledges to support UNICEF by donating one of her hats to UNICEF’s Auction for Action. This online auction is a fundraising effort aimed towards improving UNICEF’s children’s programs in the Philippines and around the world. The hat for auction is the pirate hat worn by British music legend Adam Ant.

Aside from the hat, the lot includes a signed Adam Ant poster, a tour shirt from Ant’s “The Good, the Mad, and The Lovely Tour”, 4 badges, a wristband, handwritten notes from Mich Dulce and Adam Ant, and a plectrum used by Adam Ant at a recent gig in London’s The 100 Club.

HBO Receives 12 Golden Globe Nominations is a post from: Shopping Finds

Despite the travel advisories issued by the US, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, and France against traveling to the Philippines, British-American owned World Cruise Ship SS Oriana docked in Manila on Monday morning to see what our city has to offer. The cruise ship carries 1,818 passengers, most of them British, American, and Australian nationals. And none of them were the least bit worried about terrorist attacks from crazy individuals – everyone was excited to see Manila.

The passengers spent the day touring points of interest in Manila, Tagaytay, and Corregidor, and visited various shopping malls before going back to the ship for their next port of call.

The USS Oriana was the biggest cruise group we have ever received, and many of the passengers intend to come back at a future date to experience more of the Philippines. ————

The Philippines in general may not be a very big soccer nation but there are some soccer enthusiasts in the country who are willing to participate in tournaments for a good cause. Take the Homeless World Cup for instance, a global event that sees more than 60 nations gathered in a series of street soccer tournaments. Unlike the actual World Cup, where countries are only in it for national pride, The Homeless World Cup was initiated to bring awareness and opportunity to marginalized people from all over the world. Homeless men and women get a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent their country and become national heroes.

This year’s Homeless World Cup will be taking place at Capacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from the 19th-26th September 2010. And yes, the Philippines will be sending a team! Representing the Philippines are twins Hammid and Abdula Pasion (Laguna), brothers Mark and Lexter Maravilla (Quezon), best friends Michael Quinlat and Tonie Mark Arinal (Talisay City), Revect Lagardo (Manila), and Leopoldo “Jun Jun” Aragon (Bacolod). To further inspire the players, the Team Philippines coach wrote a song called Bayani, whose lyrics talk of the change within the group and the courage and pride the team will take to the international tournament.

Team Philippines 2010 builds on the success of Philippine teams who took part in Homeless World Cup competitions in 2008 and 2009. The 2008 Philippine team finished 37th out of 48 nations in Melbourne, Australia, beating teams such as Rwanda, India, Namibia and Sweden. In 2009, the Philippine squad played to a respectable 29th place finish. This also landed the team the recognition as the best in Asia.
