Sleep comfort with Tempur Pillows

My husband and I surround ourselves with pillows of all shapes and sizes in our queen-sized bed. What I forgot to consider is the quality of the pillow. Or I just wasn’t aware of pillows that provide maximum comfort to our neck area. We headed off to Tempur showroom at the EDSA Shangrila mall to check the pillows and bed mattress. I would have thought there is only one pillow to choose. There are 9 kinds of Tempur Pillows: Long Hug Pillow, Original Pillow, Millenium Pillow, Classic Pillow, Symphony Pillow, Sonata Pillow, Design Pillow, Comfort pillow, and Ombracio Pillow.

The Sales person first explained the origins of Tempur. The material is unique, originally developed for the NASA space programme in order to protect and offer comfort cushioning for astronauts traveling in space. The material in Tempur absorbs pressure at both heavy and light loads.

My husband and I were looking for maximum comfort to our neck area and allowing our neck and shoulders to relax completely. We also told the Tempur Salesperson that we both sleep on our sides. The Original and the Millenium are the therapeutic-oriented pillows of Tempur. Since we loved sleeping on our side, The Original was suggested . We didn’t take their word for it. My husband tested it himself..

I took a photo of my husband as he laid down on the Original pillow. I can see that it moulds perfectly to the exact contours of his neck and head. Now that should give him excellent support and relief to the neck and shoulder muscles. He often complains of stiff neck when he does not get enough sleep. I tested the Original Pillow soon after and I felt the comfort on my neck. This is the pillow we want.

The only thing that felt strange is lifting the pillow. It does not hold up as our ordinary pillow used to. It will take getting used to.

That photo above is this portable mattress and pillow that can be dragged along during travels. I heard Paris Hilton drags this along with her travels.

My husband was off to another treat because Tempur had a sleeping chamber for testing their mattress which we plan to buy at another time. But for now, it is just two Original Tempur pillows. Watch out for our sleep experience in another entry.

Muji Manila Opens on October 16

If you’ve been to Hong Kong or Singapore, you would have definitely heard of the Japanese lifestyle store Muji. MUJI is short for Mujirushi Ryohin—which translates to “no brand, quality products” and that’s exactly what their merchandise is all about! As a brand born at the height of Japan’s consumerist phase in the 1980’s, Muji was a breath fresh of air with their revolutionary idea of eliminating logos and focusing instead on functionality and product design. In addition to their penchant for simplicity and the zen aesthetic, Muji also expresses their concern for the environment through minimizing packaging and encouraging customers to stick to the essentials.

On October 16, Muji finally opens its Philippine flagship store at Bonifacio High Street. Here is a sneak preview of what you can expect from this amazing store, which were taken during the Mujia Manila media launch.

At Muji, you can find a wide variety of practical, useful, and well-designed every day items, from clothes to kitchenware to furniture.

The first thing you’ll see is the women’s apparel section. Most of the clothes are made from cotton (some 100% organic), and come in plain colors and basic designs. Prices for a shirt starts at P995, while a dress costs P1,950. There are also sneakers and ballet flats for over P2,000.

Muji is the place to go if you need bookshelves or a storage solution of sorts.

They’ve got organizers for everything – shoes, clothes, documents, and accessories.

Muji also carries cotton linens in basic, solid colors. Don’t you just love the clean lines of this display? Pillowcases are sold in singles so that customers can avoid waste by sticking only to what they need.

There’s also a small section for beauty and skin care.

Philippine School of Interior Design 2010 Annual Exhibit

The Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID) invites everyone to view the graduation exhibit of the advanced class of 2010. The exhibit is called “Caleidoscope” and focuses on the four C’s: Color, Character, Cause and Cost. These are design elements that challenged the batch to create 18 classy, creative, and cost-efficient interiors, featuring the booths: Saffron, Sunflower, Chartreuse, Avocado, Sage, Cerulean, Turquoise, Indigo, Cornflower, Midnight, Heliotrope, Aubergine, Cerise, Tomato, Sang de Boeuf, Cinnabar, Persimmon, and Cinnamon.

The exhibit is open to the public at the Athena Building (where 7-11 store is), Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City from October 3 to 31 from 10 am to 8 pm. You can also look under the jump for sketches and photos of the 18 exhibits.

Why You Should Have Your Mattresses Deep-Cleaned

These creatures look like alien invaders from another planet, but millions of them are already here on earth, living in your bedroom. They’re called dust mites, microscopic creatures that thrive in warm, moist surroundings like the insides of a mattress, cushioned sofas, carpets, or pillows. The reason they concentrate on lounging areas is because they feed on the dead skin cells or dander we shed. Humans shed about 10 grams of dead skin a week, and our beds and living room sets contain a high amount of dander from all the time we spend sleeping or watching TV. In fact, a typical bedroom mattress can have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million dust mites inside. Ten percent of the weight of a two-year old pillow is probably made up of dead dust mites and their droppings.

Although dust mites are generally harmless to human beings, a large number of mites can cause allergies. One single dust mite can produce 20 waste droppings everyday, and all of their droppings contain a protein that humans are allergic to. Depending on the person’s sensitivity and the amount of exposure, allergic reactions can range from watery eyes to asthma attacks.

To get rid of dust mites and other accumulated dirt, it’s a good idea to have your mattresses, cushions, and pillows deep-cleaned twice a year. Yesterday, we had all of our mattresses and living room set professionally vacuumed for the first time. Want to see just how dirty a mattress can get after years without cleaning?

This is from a mattress that has been with us for over ten years. It gathered so much dirt, the water from the vacuum cleaner turned into mud!

According to the cleaners, the first cleaning is usually the worst because you’re getting rid of years worth of dead mites and dirt. But if you have your mattresses cleaned regularly, you probably won’t see this much dirt.

Honey Comb Drum

The honey comb drum is a new feature of Miele’s laundry care appliances.
