Hasbro Board Games

Board games made up a huge part of my childhood. In my grade school days, brownouts happened like clockwork from 6pm onwards, leaving me with nothing much to do after getting homework out of the way. The board games we had at home kept my sister and I from dying of boredom; we’d play endless games of Monopoly, Boggle, and Clue with our parents or the household help. At school, board games were also a huge hit. Classmates would also bring their Hasbro games during events like the intramurals or the school fair; we’d be completely indifferent to the activities outside as we moved our game pieces from one box to another. To this day, I still enjoy playing board games with friends; every now and then, we get together for board game nights over good food and beer. And looking at Hasbro’s 2010 catalog makes me want to start collecting my favorite childhood board games again and try out games I haven’t played before.

Jenga Refresh

Jenga Refresh is the original Jenga wood block game that I grew up with. It’s a very simple game – all you have to do is pull out lower blocks and stack them on top without toppling the tower.

Jenga Transformers

Now this Jenga game was not around when I was a kid. It’s like the classic Jenga game except it has two towers – one for the Autobots and one for the Decepticons. Choose your side and build your tower. If your opponent’s tower falls, you win the game!

Boggle

I played this game all throughout grade school! Boggle is a word finder game – place the letter blocks in a compact case and shake. Raise the lid, and find as many words as you can in three minutes. The new Boggle game is far more high-tech though; instead of an hourglass sand timer (which I found very fascinating), it has a build-in timer that changes color and beeps to let you know when time is up.

Games to Go Operation

Operation is another fun game that was popular in shcool. Basically, you “operate” on Sam by carefully removing bugs from his body. If your tools touch the sides of the incision, you lose.

The Game of Life

I have never played The Game of Life, but I’d definitely want to give it a try! The 50th Anniversary Edition has five special coins that bring better rewards if you have one at the end.

Scattergories

This fast-thinking categories game involves matching categories using words that start with the same letter. You score points when no other player matches your answers.

Cranium

I’ve never played Cranium but my boyfriend grew up on this game and he loves it. Basically, players have to complete activities in each one of the four sections to win:

Creative Cat – a player must clue a word to his or her teammates by drawing it, sculpting it in clay, or drawing it with his or her eyes closed
Data Head – a player must answer various trivia questions
Word Worm – players have to unscramble words, guess definitions, identify words with letters left out, or spell words backwards
Star Performer – player must impersonate a celebrity, act out a clue, or whistle a song

We actually have our very own copy of Cranium. Now it’s just a matter of scheduling a board game night so we can play with friends!
